Hot Fun in the Summertime

by Julie Particka on May 30th, 2009 at 5:31 pm

Birds are chirping, sun is shining, kids (even in first grade) have senioritis…

Yep, summer is rapidly approaching, and I have a lot ton of stuff going on. The first change came a bit early – moving my blogging here as opposed to livejournal. Next up is a test drive of a new writing group. No worries, KAOWG peeps, I’m not leaving, I’m just going to try to do both. That leads to a rather intense question of my sanity, but from my understanding, the other site doesn’t involve much in the way of line edits, so it won’t be quite so time-intensive. The hubs is taking off for a business trip again on Monday, which hopefully means I will immerse myself in Cass’s book for at least a couple hours every night and get moving on it. I’m not sure why exactly her book is so much harder for me than Elle’s was, but I’m not losing myself in it. (And I’m hoping like hell that doesn’t mean it just sucks because my beta readers from book 1 are already on my case about getting it finished.)

So, writing-wise, summer plans are to toss Pretty Souls to the wolves at OWW and see how much they tear it apart, bust my butt and get a rough draft of Partly Human (working title, hoping for divine inspiration for something with more punch) done before travel time is upon us, and do my best to make at least weekly updates on the blog and website. Oh, speaking of the site, I’m hoping to have the first few chapters of Pretty Souls on it soonish.

And, I have a lot of travel starting coming up. Hubs is taking some time off at the end of June and we’re going to do something fairly local. Exactly how local hasn’t been determined yet, but we are debating taking off to Cedar Point for a couple days of amusement park insanity. Then hubs is going on a motorcycle/camping thing for a few days. More writing time for me – yay! (Or, more likely, a visit to the fam, where I am more or less forbidden from bringing out my computer – boo.) In July we are off to the Carolinas to visit the in-laws and spend some time in Myrtle Beach. We’ll get back just in time for me to do laundry and pack to go to Anticipation in Montreal!

Anticipation (World-Con 67) is the first big con I will have ever attended, and I’m torn between bouts of excitement and nerves. I’m going solo, which will be a nice break from the family 24/7, but also means I’ll potentially have too much alone time. So, I’m vowing to spend as few daylight hours in my hotel room as possible. Goals for Antcipation include learning, networking, and having a good time. I’m a little worried about proper attire since I’m not just going for fun, therefore any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I get back from Montreal just long enough for the kids to make me wish I’d become Canadian and stayed over the border, and then I’m going back anyway for the KA meet in Ottawa. Good times with good friends!  Of course, now that I’m looking at this schedule, I’m stressing out because there is so little time that we’ll all be here this summer. It’s a tiny bit depressing. I’m trying to focus on being excited instead.

So, how about you? What are your plans for the summer? (And if you’re going to Anticipation, let me know!)

Twitter and Networking and Friendships oh my!

by Julie Particka on May 18th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Back in January, my critique partner introduced me to Twitter and mentioned it was a great way to “get to know” agents. I signed up and haven’t looked back. I’ve “met” and had great conversations with several agents, editors, as well as other writers. These chats have run the gamut from publishing to kids to conventions to pets.

A couple months later, I started sending out queries. I didn’t actually anticipate the Twitter conversations to have an effect on whether my query was put in the request pile or the reject one.  Then I received a request for more, followed up by an encouraging rejection with advice on how to improve the book. Good advice. I did my best to apply it (still not sure how well I did on that front). But in the back of my head were these niggling thoughts: was it only requested because of the budding friendship, was that why the advice was offered, did it actually suck and this person was just trying to be nice because we are friends?

For a while it really bothered me, but then my husband reminded me of the purpose of networking: to get your foot in the door, to make connections, etc. So, after much stress, I’m finally doing better and looking at it from the perspective of “it doesn’t matter”. Because really, either the query was solid enough to get snagged or I have the makings of a great friend in the person who was willing to help me out when they could have just sent a form rejection.

Either way (you know who you are), I just wanted to say thanks.

So what about the rest of you? Any stories of networking gone really wrong or really right?

Open for business!

After sweating blood and finally begging my husband for help, the blog is more or less the way I want it.  I will do my best to get a real post up today or tomorrow, but I just wanted to say hi to anyone that might pop in here.
